Mary, thanks for your comment and great question. As we’ve mentioned in this article Madagascar is beautiful and fascinating, but it is also complex and the problems of poverty and deforestation are very real. However, as we’ve also written here we believe that traveling to Madagascar in a deliberate way can help support conservation efforts and communities. This means choosing a tour and experiences that support local wildlife, environment and people. The G Adventures tour that we went on – Madagascar Highlights – is part of their Jane Goodall Collection so it has a special focus on wildlife and environmental conservation. This is why we specifically did things like visit community parks, do a homestay in a village, plant trees in a reforestation program. I’ve never taken a tour with Kensington Tours, but I do believe they have a good reputation. What I would do is ask them how their tours work towards conservation in Madagascar so that you understand whether the tour will meet your goals. But, I definitely would go if you have the opportunity.

I hope you can help me – I am ambivalent about going to Madagascar. The poverty and the way animals are treated may ruin me – but I also want to experience this beautiful country and help in conservation efforts. I still remember the rampant stray dogs in Belize and the Caribbean. I know this sounds really stupid. The tour I am considering is thru Kensington Tours. It is a 14 day tour and seems like we will be going to national parks and not anywhere the animals are exploited. They seem to have a good reputation. I do have a couple books (one is Lonely Planet and the other is Hilary Bradt). I will be 68 by the time I go so I can’t do a whole lot but I can walk (just not hike in rocky areas).
Anyway, your unbiased response will be much appreciated!!
