Omar, it’s interesting how sometimes it’s the people from a country who don’t recommend visiting 🙂

What an irony: I am one of those who would not recommend visiting Paraguay and, certainly, that already makes me a target.

Linda, I am sure you have a fascinating visit ahead of you, especially as you will reconnect with your host family! While I imagine a lot has changed, at least on the surface, since you lived in Asuncion in 1980-1981, I’m sure you’ll find lots of similarities in terms of family traditions and culture. Hope is all goes well!!

I was an AFS exchange student from rural Missouri to Asuncion for a year 1980-81. I lived with a host family and attended a local high school. My husband and I plan to visit in April.

I’ve been in touch with my host mother and four of my host siblings, some of their kids, classmates, and some neighbors via Facebook for a while now. It will be interesting to see what has changed and what has stayed the same. It will also be interesting to share the experience with my husband.

What a great article! I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was well written and concise. I’m heading to Paraguay in a few weeks. It’s one of the few South American countries which has escaped my radar thus far. Thanks

Hi Ani,
It is probably easiest if you go first to Asuncion and try to organize things from there. If you like nature and jungle then I’d suggest going to Concepcion and get in touch with Peter for Granja Roble (http://www.paraguay.ch/) – he also offers boat and other adventure trips on the nearby rivers and seems to know everything about that part of the country. Paraguay is very flat, so be sure to manage your expectations as there aren’t really many mountains here. Enjoy your trip!
