I’m interested to see where Tarija’s wine industry can go. More time and wine-making “technology” should help.

As for the basketball courts, we didn’t notice them. Perhaps the folks in Tarija are a bit taller than the rest of the country. Not far-fetched, since they are close to Argentina, another country that seems to love its basketball.

Love the article about the city, its people and the wine. I’ve been going to Santa Cruz for about the last 12 years. I traveled to Tarija about 4 years ago and visited Casa Vieja. I still tell stories about the place. I live in California about an hour away from Napa and help keep the wine economy afloat. But I still am more impressed with the enthusiasim of the micro-growers of Tarija. I am getting ready to return to SC for a visit next week and will be also returning to Tarija for a few days. By the way, did you notice all the basketball courts in Tarija. They are crazy for basketball, Who knew?

@Sofia: Thanks for your comment and welcome. As you indicate, Tarija is a perfect example of one of those locations that illustrates our shared philosophy. Travel and discovery is very much about people. Although museums and sights can communicate and demonstrate culture, the people you meet are living examples of it.

Both interesting and inspiring! It’s not what you did and what tourism-stuff you saw that you will remember the most, but the people you met, the life on the streets and the culture differences you become so aware of, so like you said it doesn’t really matter if there isn’t a “laundry list of tourism sights” 😉

@Blake: Tarija is not representative of Bolivia – if our experience is any measure. While it has some features common to all of Bolivia, it’s sort of a place unto itself…that most people don’t take the time to visit. If you’d like an overview of Bolivia outside of Tarija:
