Well said. That kind of sums up what I think we’re both trying to do (although I think you’re better at it!) for a whole range of issues. Interesting times…

Thank you for such a thought-provoking comment, Abi. I appreciate and share your discomfort. The irony: when society feels compelled to call something out with a holiday, it usually tells us that we’re not adequately honoring or addressing the issue in the first place. It’s like Human Rights Day. Shouldn’t every day be?

Agreed, attention to and investment in education has been and always will be the most reliable path to addressing whatever ails not only the advancement of women but also our society in general.

Obviously, this article jumps in the issue current pretty far downstream from the headwater. It considers the moment someone has decided to travel and asks what one might do then in favor of women’s issues. Our suggestions intend not only to inform a traveler’s planning or purchase decisions, but to affect a choice of a travel experience or way of traveling. This way, we hope to place the traveler in a context which deepens his/her understanding of just how important and challenging women’s issues and education are around the world.

With that, our not-so-secret tiny hope is that the traveler emerges from the experience changed, goes home and thinks on it all a bit differently, and does something about it, however small.

I remember being absolutely shocked to learn at Med School that the biggest way to have an impact on child mortality and general life expectancy was to allow little girls to go to school. At the time, that beat interventions with medicine, clean water, housing, healthcare for children, everything. I’m not as up to date now but I suspect the principle still holds true. Thank you for this useful and thought-provoking post. There are still areas I feel uncomfortable with in regards to fitting half the world into one big category but, ach, we have to start somewhere!

It’s great to read about these initiatives to improve the livelihoods of women.

As travel provides a platform for better understanding our world, it definitely surfaces issues along the way. For those of us fortunate enough to travel, I think it’s an opportunity for growth and deepening of the experience if we find a few issues that we think we can effectively articulate and shine a light on. This is one of them. Glad to hear you share the passion, Nicole.
